Normal body weight and how it is measured

How body weight is measured?

Body weight is important, it helps assess your body composition, and can predict your health status. Research has showed that excessive body weight can lead to heart problems, diabetes. The equipment for checking the body weight is scales, it is checked by the individual standing on the weighing scale, with both hands by their sides, and excessive luggage, like shoes, bags are put off before standing on the weighing scale. Knowing your body weight is a good way to start your weight loss program.

Body Mass Index determines your normal weight for your height and age

You need to know how much you weight before starting your weight loss program.

Apparently, a lot of young people do not understand these process before starting a weight loss plan. Standing by a mirror does not help you know if you have normal body weight, or you are underweight. Knowing your BMI helps you know what to do.

Body mass index (BMI) is a measurement for your body fat, and it is calculated by the division of your body weight by the square of your height.

I explained how to check your weight in the above, you can get your height in centimeters or in feet.

Formula to calculate BMI

In metric

Weight (Kg) / Height (m) square

For example

My weight is 55kg and height is 1.68metres

To calcuate my BMI

55/ 1.68*1.68 = 19.48

OR

Weight (Kg) / Height (cm) square * 10,000

Inch

Weight (In) / Height (in) square *703

Example

My weight in pounds is 121pounds and height in inches 66.14

To calculate my BMI

121/ 66.14 (in)/ 66.14 (in) * 703 = 19.4

What is normal body weight?

Having known how to calculate your BMI in both metrics and imperial, you should also know the range of what a normal body weight is.

  • If your BMI falls below 18.5 = Underweight
  • 18.5 – 24.9 BMI = Healthy weight
  • 25.0 – 29.9 = Overweight
